In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, “One day at a time,” seems to be the motto. We find ourselves grappling with loss and uncertainty as Hurricane Helene has taken so much from us – our homes, our roads, our businesses, our belongings, and the comfort of familiarity.

These have been some of the most challenging days our community has ever faced. Many of us, our friends, family, and neighbors have lost everything. We’ve faced unimaginable loss, grief, and heartache. Yet, even within the darkest of days, we also see the light of compassion shining through the hearts of those around us. Our community is truly remarkable.

During this time, we are reminded of a quote from the late Leigh Cooper Wallace, a beloved coach and teacher at Watauga High School, who once said, “You are stronger than you think.” In times like these, Leigh’s words ring truer than ever. Though the days, weeks, months, and even years ahead may seem daunting – our strength, as individuals and as a community, is far greater than we often realize.

Many have reached out asking how they can help. While we are deeply touched by the countless offers of support and the willingness of so many to simply lend a helping hand, we emphasize that what we need most right now are donations. As we work through the challenges ahead, we kindly ask that you refrain from coming here as volunteers. While it may be tempting to visit our beloved High Country, our state and county officials ask that you please stay put so that emergency responders can safely enter our towns and navigate our treacherous conditions. Instead, we urge you to consider making financial contributions to the Appalachian Healthcare Foundation to directly support our local recovery efforts.

At UNC Health Appalachian, employees are experiencing significant hardships. Their homes have washed away, their cars have been totaled, and the roads leading to their homes have been obliterated. At the moment, we haven’t been able to reach or get in touch with 25% of our employees.

Our employees have always provided us with selfless healing and compassionate care, and we’d like to show them the same. For those who wish to support the employees of UNC Health Appalachian who have been affected by Hurricane Helene, you can make a donation directly to their relief fund here. We cannot do it without you.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed in any way. If you would like to make a donation of supplies, click here  for a list of High Country sites still accepting donations of supplies.

With each sunrise, it will bring new challenges, yet together, we will face them one day at a time. It’s a journey we will walk together.
