UNC Health Appalachian Inspires Future Healthcare Heroes at First “Bring Your Child to Work Day”

UNC Health Appalachian had the honor this week of hosting its very first “Bring Your Child to Work Day” event, creating an engaging and memorable experience for both staff and their families. Team members entrusted the People Services department with their children for a thoughtfully planned, hands-on day of learning and discovery. Approximately 30 students participated, divided into two groups—elementary and middle/high school—so each age range could enjoy activities tailored to their level.

Throughout the day, middle and high school students explored the hospital environment and gained a unique behind-the-scenes look at how different departments work together to provide exceptional care. They had the opportunity to interact with and learn from teams across the organization, including Plant Operations, Dietary, Inpatient nursing, Operations, EMS & AirCare, and Hospital Police.

Our younger participants dove into exciting topics like laboratory science, microorganisms, DNA, inpatient nursing, EMS, AirCare, and hospital safety, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm through interactive experiences. They also learned about Imaging and how to become radio technicians.

By the end of the event, it was hard to tell who enjoyed the experience more—the dedicated staff sharing their knowledge or the students eagerly soaking it all in. Most importantly, the day left a lasting impression, inspiring and encouraging the next generation to explore future opportunities in healthcare and beyond. With the success of the first “Bring Your Child to Work Day,” organizers are already planning a similar event next year.
